Description

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) PhD Program 2026–2027 is a fully funded, five-year doctoral programme in Japan designed for students interested in advanced interdisciplinary scientific research. The application deadline for the 2027 admission round is 15 November 2026 at 23:59 JST. The programme begins with laboratory rotations and develops into an individually tailored research curriculum leading to a PhD. All OIST PhD students receive financial support through a Research Assistantship, with current support starting at approximately JPY 2.6 million per year and increasing with academic progress up to approximately JPY 3.6 million per year. The support package includes tuition-related support and living support. OIST also provides student services and research support, while travel and other benefits are available according to applicable policies. Applicants whose qualifying university education was not conducted in English must provide a recent IELTS or TOEFL iBT score; OIST states that there is no minimum score, as the result is used to determine preparatory course requirements.
